HDPE Pipe Grades: Selecting the Right Compound

High-density polyethylene (HDPE) is the backbone of modern pressure-pipe systems, delivering decades of reliable service in water distribution, gas networks, and industrial fluid transport. But not all HDPE is equal โ€” selecting the correct pipe grade is essential for long-term performance.

The PE100 Standard

Modern pressure-pipe HDPE is classified by its Minimum Required Strength (MRS) at 20 ยฐC over 50 years. PE100 โ€” the most widely specified grade โ€” has an MRS of 10.0 MPa, allowing thinner walls and higher flow capacity than older PE80 materials.

PE100 grades like DOT RAD's P100 combine high stiffness, outstanding environmental stress-crack resistance (ESCR), and long-term hydrostatic strength.

Key Properties to Specify

  • Density โ€” typically 0.941โ€“0.965 g/cmยณ for pipe grades
  • Melt-flow rate โ€” low (0.2โ€“0.5 g/10min) for extrusion stability
  • ESCR โ€” critical resistance to slow crack growth
  • Carbon black content โ€” 2.0โ€“2.5% for UV stabilization in outdoor installations

Applications

PE100 pipe grades are used across potable water mains, sewage and drainage, gas distribution, cable ducting, and industrial slurry transport. Their weldability, flexibility, and corrosion resistance make them superior to traditional steel or concrete in most buried applications.
