Both LDPE and LLDPE are workhorses of the flexible-packaging industry, yet they differ in molecular structure, processing behaviour, and the mechanical properties of the finished film. Understanding these differences is key to specifying the right grade.
Molecular Structure
LDPE (low-density polyethylene) has a highly branched polymer chain. The long-chain branches prevent tight packing, resulting in lower density, high clarity, and excellent flexibility.
LLDPE (linear low-density polyethylene) has a linear backbone with uniform short-chain branches (typically butene or octene). This structure delivers significantly higher tensile strength and puncture resistance at a comparable density.

For display packaging, shrink film, and applications where clarity matters, LDPE grades like DOT RAD's 5510 are ideal. For stretch wrap, heavy-duty sacks, and any film that must resist puncture under load, LLDPE (such as our 3840 grade) is the better choice.
